According to the Basketball-Reference glossary, it's designed as a quicker, more intuitive alternative to Hollinger's own Player Efficiency Rating (PER), built to be worked out by hand from a standard box score without needing pace or league-average adjustments.

Coaches, analysts, and fans use it to figure out how good a single game actually was at a glance, comparing a 30-point night on heavy volume shooting against a quieter 18-point, 10-assist, 5-steal game that might carry a similar or even higher score. Why Field Goal Attempts Count Against the Score

The formula subtracts 0.7 points for every field goal attempt, made or missed, which surprises people seeing it for the first time. That penalty exists because every shot attempt uses up a possession, and a missed shot produces zero return on that possession while an attempt that doesn't convert still carries an opportunity cost the team could have used elsewhere.

As a result, a player who scores 20 points on 12 shots rates meaningfully higher than one who scores 20 points on 25 shots, even though their raw point totals are identical. Game Score vs. PER: What's the Difference

Game Score and Player Efficiency Rating come from the same creator and share a similar spirit, but they aren't interchangeable. Game Score skips pace and minutes adjustments entirely, which makes it fast to work out from a single box score but less reliable for comparing performances across different game lengths or eras. PER, on the other hand, is normalized on a per-minute basis so that the league average always sits at exactly 15.0, which is what makes it more suitable for full-season comparisons.

In practice, that means Game Score is best used the way it was intended, rating one specific game, while PER is the better tool for judging a player's overall season-long value. Accuracy and Limitations

The math itself is exact, given a correct box score, the formula produces the same result every time with no rounding ambiguity. What it does not account for is opponent quality, defensive matchup difficulty, or the game situation a player was operating in, a Game Score of 20 in garbage time against a weak bench doesn't carry the same weight as 20 against a playoff-caliber starting lineup.

The Most Common Game Score Misreading

The mistake I see most often is treating a single game's Game Score as if it settles an argument about which of two players had the better all-around performance, without looking into the box score behind the number. A 22 built on 9-for-11 shooting with 8 assists and a 22 built on 9-for-22 shooting with 3 turnovers can land close to the same final figure for very different reasons. With that in mind, always pull up the actual line behind a Game Score before using it as the entire basis for a comparison, since the formula compresses a lot of context into one number.

How Game Score settled a locker-room argument about who actually had the better night

A teammate and I got into a good-natured argument after a game where he'd put up 24 points on 22 shots and I'd finished with 14 points, 9 assists, and 4 steals.
