What Is Net Run Rate?
Net run rate (NRR) measures the difference between how fast a team scores and how fast they concede runs, averaged across every match in a tournament. According to ESPNcricinfo, the formula is runs scored divided by overs faced, minus runs conceded divided by overs bowled, giving a single number that captures scoring efficiency on both sides of the game at once.
A positive NRR means a team is outscoring its opponents on average, a negative NRR means the reverse. It's become the standard way tournaments separate teams that finish level on points in a round-robin league table.
The All-Out Rule: Why Getting Bowled Out Hurts Your NRR
If a team is bowled out before completing their allotted overs, the NRR calculation uses the full overs quota, 50 for ODIs, 20 for T20s, rather than the overs the team actually faced before losing all their wickets. A team scoring 150 all out in 30 overs of a 50-over match is credited with 150 runs across 50 overs for NRR purposes, not 30.
This rule exists specifically to stop teams gaming the system, without it, a side could inflate its run rate by collapsing quickly rather than batting out a low-scoring innings to its natural conclusion.
Why NRR Is Used as a Tiebreaker
NRR has been used in Cricket World Cups since 1992 and has become the most widely used tiebreaker in multi-team, round-robin tournament formats. It rewards teams for winning convincingly, not just winning, since a large margin of victory (through fast scoring, cheap dismissals of the opposition, or both) moves NRR further in a team's favor than a narrow win does. That's a deliberate design choice: two teams can finish a round-robin stage with identical win-loss records, and NRR is what separates a team that ground out narrow victories from one that dominated its matches from start to finish.

The clearest illustration of NRR deciding a tournament outcome came in the 1999 World Cup Super Six stage, where Australia and South Africa finished tied on points, and Australia's superior NRR (+0.36 against South Africa's +0.17) decided who advanced. The 2023 World Cup produced an equally memorable NRR scenario at the other end of the table. Pakistan needed to beat England by roughly 275 runs in their final group match to leapfrog New Zealand's net run rate and reach the semi-final, a margin widely regarded as effectively impossible in a 50-over match. How DLS-Affected Matches Change NRR
When a match is shortened by weather, NRR uses the reduced overs each side was actually allotted under DLS, not the tournament's original scheduled overs. According to Wikipedia, this is a separate adjustment from the all-out rule, accounting for overs genuinely lost to conditions rather than to a team collapsing.

The Most Common Net Run Rate Misunderstanding
The mistake I see most often is assuming NRR simply reflects how many matches a team has won, rather than a genuinely separate scoring-efficiency figure. With that in mind, two teams with identical win-loss records can carry very different NRRs depending on the margins involved, and a team chasing a qualification spot on NRR alone needs to look into the actual runs-per-over gap, not just the result column, before assuming a win is enough on its own. How the all-out rule pushed our NRR far higher than I first calculated by hand
Going into the final league match of a local T20 tournament, we were tied on points with a rival club and needed a strong net run rate to leapfrog them into the qualifying spot. We scored 178 off our 20 overs, then bowled the opposition out for just 96 in 15.3 overs. Doing the math by hand at the boundary rope, I divided 96 by 15.3 overs faced and got a runs-conceded rate of about 6.27, which barely improved on our own scoring rate of 8.9 and left our net run rate looking like a disappointing +2.63.
Running the same numbers through this calculator with the all-out box ticked told a different story. Since the opposition was bowled out before completing their 20 overs, the calculation credits their 96 runs across the full 20-over quota, not the 15.3 overs they actually faced, dropping their runs-conceded rate to 4.8 and pushing our real net run rate to +4.10. According to Wikipedia, that all-out rule exists precisely so a cheap bowling-out doesn't get shortchanged by only counting the overs actually bowled.
The corrected +4.10 was comfortably enough to leapfrog our rival's net run rate and secure the qualifying spot, a full 1.47 higher than my hand calculation had suggested. It's a mistake I haven't made since, and one I now double-check for every teammate who tries to work out NRR from a bowled-out innings on their own.
