The follow-on lets the team that batted first in a multi-day match require the opposing team to bat again immediately, skipping the leading team's own second innings, if the trailing side's first-innings deficit is large enough. It exists specifically in formats where each side bats twice, Test cricket and first-class cricket, since there's no equivalent concept in single-innings formats like ODIs or T20s.
