Because the winner's new rating anchors to the opponent's pre-match rating rather than their own, the identity of who you beat matters more than the raw fact of winning. Beating a team rated 275 pulls your rating up toward 325, while beating a team rated 200 only pulls it toward 250, even though both are the same +50 structural bonus applied to a different base number.
That structure is deliberate: it rewards genuine upsets and prevents a team from padding its rating by repeatedly beating weak opposition, since the ceiling on what a win is worth is set by how strong the beaten team already was.
Team Ratings vs. Player Ratings: Different Scales
