What Tire Size Notation Actually Means

A code like 265/70R17 packs three separate measurements into one string. Les Schwab's guide to reading a tire sidewall breaks it down clearly: 265 is the section width in millimeters, 70 is the aspect ratio, the sidewall's height as a percentage of that width, and 17 is the wheel diameter the tire is built to fit, in inches. Nothing in that code states the tire's overall diameter directly, which is exactly the number most people actually want when comparing sizes.

The "R" between the aspect ratio and rim diameter indicates radial construction, the standard on nearly every passenger tire sold today, distinguishing it from the older bias-ply construction that used a different letter code entirely. How to Calculate Overall Diameter from the Sidewall Numbers
