Whether you are curious about the gap between siblings, partners, or historical figures, an age difference calculator lets you figure out the exact difference between two birth dates in years, months, days, and weeks. The result is more precise than simply subtracting birth years.

Calendar arithmetic makes simple subtraction inaccurate. If Person A was born on December 31, 1990, and Person B on January 1, 1991, subtracting birth years gives a one-year gap. But the real difference is just one day. Given that, using a proper date-based calculator is essential for accurate results.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator finds the absolute difference between two dates in milliseconds, then converts it to days, weeks, months (approximate), and years. Months are calculated as the calendar-month difference adjusted for whether the day of month has been reached.

The TimeAndDate date calculator uses the same underlying Gregorian calendar arithmetic. The key edge cases to work out are month-end dates, leap year boundaries, and the direction of the subtraction.

Example Calculation

PersonDate of BirthAge Difference
Person AMarch 15, 19858 years, 9 months, 14 days
Person BDecember 29, 1993
Person CJune 1, 20000 years, 6 months, 1 day
Person DDecember 2, 2000

Age Gap in Relationships

Research from the Pew Research Center shows that most married couples in the United States have an age gap under five years. Larger gaps exist and are socially accepted to varying degrees depending on culture. That said, the calculator makes no judgment about age gaps in any relationship context.

On top of that, age difference calculations are useful in medical contexts. A pediatrician comparing a child to developmental milestones needs the precise age to the day, and comparing siblings' ages helps track family health patterns.

Historical Use Cases

Historians use age difference calculations to build up timelines. For example, working out that Napoleon was 24 years older than the Duke of Wellington adds context to their confrontation at Waterloo. With that in mind, date arithmetic underpins a surprisingly wide range of research fields.

Total Days and Weeks

The total days between two dates is simply the absolute calendar-day difference. Total weeks divides that by 7. To carry out this calculation manually, convert both dates to their Julian Day Number (a continuous count from a fixed reference date), then subtract. As a result, you avoid all the complexity of month-length variations.
