The calculation sounds simple, but calendar arithmetic is surprisingly tricky. Months have different lengths, leap years add an extra day every four years, and the "age in months" depends on whether the current day has passed the birth day within the month. How Age Calculation Works
To figure out your age:
- Subtract the birth year from the current year to get the base years.
- If the current month and day are before your birth month and day, subtract one year (your birthday hasn't occurred yet this year).
- Calculate remaining months and days within the current year.
Total days = (target date - birth date) in milliseconds, divided by 86,400,000. Total weeks = total days / 7. Total hours = total days × 24.
Leap Year Handling
A year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except century years (divisible by 100) must also be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. People born on February 29 officially celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, depending on jurisdiction. Given that, our calculator uses February 28 as the effective birthday in non-leap years for next birthday calculations.
