Slack time, also called float, is how much a task in a project schedule can slip without causing a problem, but "without causing a problem" actually has two different, non-interchangeable meanings in project management. The Total Slack Formula

Why the Two Numbers Diverge

How I used the Slack Time Calculator to catch a renovation contractor's scheduling conflict
A home renovation contractor emailed me in mid-2026 confused why his drywall crew running 3 days behind, well within what he'd calculated as their task's slack, still triggered an angry call from the electrician scheduled to start rough-in work right after.
Running his numbers through both tabs showed exactly why. His drywall task had an Early Start of day 5 and Late Start of day 9, giving 4 days of Total Slack, which is why he'd assumed a 3-day delay was safe. But the electrician's rough-in was scheduled to start the moment drywall finished, day 12 for both, so the Free Slack tab put the real number at zero: 12 (successor's Early Start) minus 12 (drywall's Early Finish).
