This calculator converts between the two competing systems the paper industry actually uses to describe how heavy a paper is: metric GSM (grams per square meter) and the US "basis weight" system, expressed in pounds. Cloudprinter's paper weight conversion guide frames the core confusion well, a "20 lb" sheet and an "80 lb" sheet aren't simply 4 times different in real thickness, because US basis weight depends entirely on which paper category the number belongs to.

Why US Basis Weight Isn't a Simple Number
Basis weight is defined as the weight, in pounds, of a ream (500 sheets) of paper cut to that category's own standard base size, not the size you're actually buying. Calculator Academy's paper weight conversion tool lists the standard base sizes this calculator uses: Bond/Writing at 17×22 inches, Text/Book at 25×38 inches, Cover at 20×26 inches, Bristol at 22.5×28.5 inches, Index at 25.5×30.5 inches, and Tag at 24×36 inches, six genuinely different reference sizes hiding behind the same unit label of "lb."
The Conversion Formula
GSM = (Basis Weight in lb × 1406.01) ÷ Base Sheet Area (in square inches). This constant comes directly from converting a 500-sheet ream's weight in pounds into grams, and its base-size area in square inches into square meters, and it checks out against real published reference points: 20 lb bond, one of the most common copy paper specs, works out to almost exactly 75 gsm, and 80 lb text works out to almost exactly 118 gsm, both figures QinPrinting's paper weight conversion reference also cites directly.
Why the Same "lb" Number Means Different Things
Because each category has its own base size, identical basis weight numbers translate to very different real GSM values. Paperpapers' paper weight calculator guide uses exactly this example: an 80 lb text sheet and an 80 lb cover sheet are not remotely the same thickness, the cover version, based on the smaller 20×26 inch reference size, comes out to roughly 216 gsm, nearly double the text version's 118 gsm, despite sharing the identical "80 lb" label.

Common Mistakes When Converting Paper Weight

How I used the Paper Weight Calculator to fix an Etsy seller's shipping cost estimate
A wedding invitation seller emailed me in mid-2026 confused why a supplier substitution, from "80 lb cover" to "100 lb text" card stock, seemed to keep her order the same weight on paper, but her actual shipping costs kept coming in higher than quoted.
Running both through the GSM ↔ lb Converter told a different story. 80 lb cover, based on its 20×26in reference size, converts to roughly 216 gsm, while 100 lb text, based on the much larger 25×38in reference size, converts to only about 148 gsm, nowhere near equivalent despite the higher lb number, exactly the category mismatch Paperpapers' paper weight guide warns about. Using the Total Weight tab with her actual 216gsm cover stock, 5×7 inch cards, and a 250-card order, the real box weight came out to about 2.7 lb (1.2 kg), the figure she should have been quoting shipping against all along instead of assuming the lb numbers were interchangeable.
