How the PTE Academic Score Is Structured
PTE Academic reports five scores on your official certificate, each on a scale of 10 to 90. One is your overall score. The other four are your communicative skill scores: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. A sixth set of scores, the enabling skills profile, which covers Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Written Discourse, appears in your personal score report but is not shared with institutions on the certificate and does not figure directly into admissions decisions. The key fact that most candidates do not figure out until they receive their first score report is that the overall score is not the average of Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. Pearson calculates the overall from your performance across the entire test, including integrated-skills questions that carry out multiple skills at once. A question that assesses both Listening and Speaking contributes to both section scores. Because of this, the overall score can be higher or lower than a simple average of your four communicative skill scores. This calculator uses the average of the four skills as a close proxy, which is how most prep tools estimate the overall before official results arrive.
PTE Score to IELTS Equivalency
Because many universities, visa categories, and immigration programs publish requirements in IELTS band terms, Pearson maintains an official concordance between PTE Academic scores and IELTS bands. The table below shows the most commonly referenced equivalencies, based on the July 2025 Pearson concordance report. Given that some immigration authorities and universities have not yet updated their systems to reflect the 2025 concordance, it is worth checking whether the requirement you are working toward uses the current or an older concordance version before assuming an equivalency applies.

Australia: The Country Where PTE Score Thresholds Matter Most
Australia is by far the most PTE-focused immigration destination in the world, and the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) applies very specific score thresholds that differ from what universities require. For Australian Skilled Migration visas, the DHA defines three levels of English proficiency: Competent English, which requires at least 50 in each of the four communicative skills; Proficient English, which requires at least 65 in each of the four skills; and Superior English, which requires at least 79 in each of the four skills. As a result, a candidate who scores 70 overall but has a Writing score of 62 does not meet the Proficient English requirement even though the overall is above 65. The per-component minimum is the critical threshold, not the overall alone. On top of that, the DHA raised the minimum PTE score for the Australian student visa from 42 to 50 overall in August 2025, so candidates applying under the pre-August standard may need to retake. Communicative Skills vs Enabling Skills: What Actually Affects Your Score
Many candidates focus on building up their enabling skills profile (Grammar, Fluency, Pronunciation) without understanding how those skills feed into the communicative skill scores that appear on the certificate. Enabling skills are diagnostic sub-scores. A low Grammar score will pull down your Writing communicative score. A low Oral Fluency score will narrow down your Speaking communicative score. However, the relationship is not one-to-one, and you cannot directly calculate your communicative skill score from your enabling skill scores. Given that institutions see only your communicative skill scores and overall on the certificate, it is the communicative skill scores that determine whether you meet a threshold, not the enabling scores. With that in mind, the most effective preparation strategy is to build up the communicative skill score in your weakest section directly, using full-length scored practice tests that report communicative skill scores rather than just enabling skill feedback. The 2025 PTE Format Changes and Their Impact on Scoring
From August 2025, Pearson introduced two new speaking task types: Respond to a Situation, which asks candidates to respond verbally to an everyday scenario, and Summarize a Group Discussion, which asks candidates to summarize a recorded group conversation. These new tasks contribute to the Speaking communicative score. On top of that, Pearson added a human expert review layer to the Content score for seven task types that were previously scored entirely by AI, including Describe Image, Write Essay, and Retell Lecture. The scoring weight of existing tasks was also adjusted to reflect the new format. As a result, PTE practice scores and band equivalencies from before August 2025 may not carry out accurately onto the post-August format. How a nurse missed Australia PR by 2 points — and how targeting one skill fixed it
In March 2026, a registered nurse from the Philippines with a PTE Academic score of 63 overall contacted me after her Australian Skilled Migration application was assessed as failing to meet the Proficient English requirement. She needed an overall score of 65 and a minimum of 65 in each communicative skill to satisfy the Department of Home Affairs threshold. Her score report showed Listening 70, Reading 68, Speaking 66, Writing 54. Her estimated overall was 64.5, which rounded to 65, but the Writing section at 54 fell 11 points below the 65 per-component minimum, disqualifying her regardless of the overall.
When we ran her section scores through the calculator, the problem came into focus immediately. The overall estimated score was right on the edge, but the section tip flagged Writing at 54 as 10 points below the overall — the largest gap across her four skills. That single section score was the sole barrier: her Listening, Reading, and Speaking sections all cleared the 65 per-component threshold. Writing alone was preventing the PR pathway from opening.
She had taken PTE twice already, improving Writing from 46 to 54 across two sittings. Her preparation had been general practice rather than task-specific, and she had been spending equal time across all four sections. Given that her other three sections were already above threshold, I recommended she work out a Writing-only preparation plan and carry out the next sitting with three months of focused preparation on Written Discourse and Grammar — the two enabling skills that feed most directly into the Writing communicative score. She used official Pearson scored practice tests and weekly assessed essay feedback to build up her Writing fluency and task structure.
In her third sitting, Writing improved from 54 to 67. Her overall moved to 68, and all four sections cleared 65. Her PR application was assessed as meeting the Proficient English requirement. The lesson I come back to with almost every PTE candidate targeting Australian immigration is that the per-component minimum matters as much as the overall, and a strong overall score built on three high sections and one low one will fail the Proficient or Superior English test every time.
