Water hardness is the concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium ions in water, expressed as an equivalent mass of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) rather than as the raw ion concentrations themselves. Omni Calculator's water hardness tool notes that expressing hardness this way lets water reports, softener specs, and treatment guidelines all speak the same standardized unit, regardless of whether the actual hardness came mostly from calcium, mostly from magnesium, or a mix of both.
This calculator covers the two things people actually need once they have a hardness number: converting calcium and magnesium readings into that standard CaCO3 figure, and working out how often a water softener needs to regenerate given a household's daily water use.
How to Calculate Hardness from Calcium and Magnesium
The formula is Hardness (mg/L as CaCO3) = 2.497 × Calcium (mg/L) + 4.118 × Magnesium (mg/L). Mountain Empire Community College's water softening calculations lesson explains where those specific multipliers come from, each is the ratio of CaCO3's molar mass (100.09 g/mol) to the ion's own atomic mass, 40.08 for calcium and 24.31 for magnesium, converting each ion into the mass of calcium carbonate that would produce an equivalent hardness. A water report listing 40 mg/L calcium and 12 mg/L magnesium works out to 2.497×40 + 4.118×12, about 149.3 mg/L as CaCO3.
Converting Between mg/L, Grains per Gallon, and Degrees
Hardness in mg/L as CaCO3 is numerically the same as parts per million, but plumbing and softener specifications in the US typically use grains per gallon (gpg) instead, and European sources often use degrees of hardness (°dH). Wikipedia's grain per gallon entry confirms 1 gpg equals 17.118 mg/L, so dividing an mg/L figure by 17.118 converts it to gpg, the unit most US water softener capacity ratings are sized around. Classifying Your Water: Soft to Very Hard
Once you have a hardness figure, the Water Quality Association's widely used classification scale sorts it into four bands. TapWater.org's water hardness scale guide lists 0 to 60 mg/L as soft, 61 to 120 as moderately hard, 121 to 180 as hard, and above 180 mg/L as very hard, the same bands this calculator's classification result uses. Soft water generally needs no treatment, while hard and very hard water are the readings that typically prompt someone to look into a softener.

Why Hardness Isn't the Same as TDS or Alkalinity
Hardness, TDS, and alkalinity are three related but distinct water chemistry measurements that get confused constantly. Frizzlife's guide to measuring hard water draws the distinction clearly: hardness counts specifically calcium and magnesium, TDS is the sum of every dissolved solid regardless of type, and alkalinity measures a water's acid-buffering capacity from carbonate and bicarbonate ions, not from calcium or magnesium at all. Water can be high in TDS without being particularly hard, or alkaline without being hard, they simply aren't measuring the same thing. Common Mistakes in Hardness Testing and Interpretation
A common mix-up is treating a raw calcium or magnesium reading as if it were already the hardness figure, forgetting that both need converting to CaCO3-equivalent units first before they mean anything on a standard hardness scale. How I used the Water Hardness Calculator to settle a disagreement over a softener quote
A homeowner forwarded me two conflicting water softener quotes in mid-2026, one installer had sized a 24,000-grain unit, another recommended 48,000 grains for the same house, and he couldn't tell which one had actually done the math correctly.
His water report listed calcium at 62 mg/L and magnesium at 18 mg/L, not a hardness figure directly, and it turned out the smaller quote had used the calcium number alone as if it were the full hardness, skipping magnesium's contribution entirely.
