Gestation length can vary slightly by breed (e.g., Nigerian Dwarfs may kidding slightly earlier). Always consult your livestock veterinarian.

Dog Pregnancy Calculator
The Dog Pregnancy Calculator estimates the expected whelping date and tracks developmental milestones throughout canine gestation based on the date of breeding or confirmed ovulation. Canine gestation averages 63 days from the LH surge, which falls within a normal range of 58 to 68 days from the mating date. Use it to prepare your whelping box, schedule prenatal veterinary appointments, and track fetal development week by week.
Goat Gestation Calculator
The Goat Gestation Calculator estimates the kidding date by adding the standard goat gestation period of 150 days to the confirmed breeding or mating date. Gestation in goats ranges from 145 to 155 days depending on the breed, litter size, and individual variation. Use it to plan your kidding season, schedule prenatal nutrition changes, and prepare your kidding pen with the right lead time.
Cat Pregnancy Calculator
The Cat Pregnancy Calculator works out the expected queening date based on your cat's mating date and breed type. Cat gestation averages 63 to 67 days, with variation across breeds. Use it to prepare a nesting box, plan veterinary visits, and track trimester milestones.
Rabbit Gestation Calculator Logic
What Is the Rabbit Gestation Calculator?
The Rabbit Gestation Calculator works out the expected kindling date by adding the breed-specific gestation period to the mating date. Rabbit breeders, small-farm owners, and pet owners use it to figure out when to place the nest box, when to increase the doe's feed, and when to expect kits. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, rabbit gestation averages 30 to 32 days, with a range of 28 to 35 days across breeds. Given that gestation is so short, the nest box must be in place 4 to 5 days before the calculated due date — not the day before.
Rabbits are among the most reproductively efficient mammals. A doe can carry multiple litters per year, and she can become pregnant again within hours of kindling. As a result, keeping accurate gestation records is essential for managing breeding intervals and preventing the physical exhaustion that comes from continuous back-to-back litters.
Gestation Length by Rabbit Breed
Breed size is the primary driver of gestation length variation in rabbits. Larger breeds tend to carry slightly longer, while dwarf breeds kindle at the shorter end of the range. The following table is based on documented averages from commercial rabbit production research and confirmed by breeder data from r/rabbits and the British Rabbit Council.
| Breed | Min Days | Average Days | Max Days | Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | 29 | 30 | 32 | Commercial meat breed |
| Rex | 30 | 31 | 32 | Fur breed, standard range |
| Holland Lop | 28 | 30 | 31 | Dwarf breed, shorter average |
| Flemish Giant | 29 | 31 | 33 | Largest breed, longer gestation |
| Californian | 29 | 31 | 32 | Commercial crossbreed standard |
Nest Box Placement and Pre-Kindling Behaviour
Place the nesting box in the doe's enclosure on day 25 to 27 of pregnancy. Fill it with grass hay and allow the doe to rearrange it to her preference. The most reliable indicator that birth is within 24 to 48 hours is fur-pulling: the doe plucks fur from her own dewlap and flanks to line the nest. On top of that, build-up of small, soft caecotropes (the doe consuming her own droppings more frequently) is commonly observed in the final 48 hours. If you observe the doe pulling fur, begin a close watch. Kindling typically takes 15 to 30 minutes for the full litter and usually occurs in the early hours of the morning.
False Pregnancy in Rabbits
False pregnancy (pseudopregnancy) occurs when a doe ovulates but conception does not take place. The doe will show all signs of pregnancy — including nest building, fur pulling, and abdominal enlargement — for 17 to 20 days before the signs resolve on their own. This turns up most often in does that are kept near intact males, handled frequently, or housed with other does who mount them. A veterinary ultrasound at 10 to 14 days is the definitive way to distinguish true pregnancy from pseudopregnancy. The AVMA guidelines on rabbit care note that spaying eliminates false pregnancy and reduces uterine cancer risk, which affects up to 80% of unspayed does by age 5.
Accuracy and Limitations
This calculator is accurate when the mating date is precisely known. Because does are induced ovulators — ovulation is triggered by the act of mating — the mating date corresponds closely to the conception date, making the estimate reliable. The calculator does not account for false pregnancy, which can superficially mimic true pregnancy for up to 20 days. If a doe does not kindle by day 34 to 35, seek veterinary assessment, as retained fetuses can become a serious health risk.
The Most Common Rabbit Breeding Mistake
The most common mistake I see is placing the nest box too late — on day 28 or even day 29 — after reading that the average gestation is 30 days. A doe who kindles on day 28 (which is within the normal range for Holland Lops and small breeds) with no nest box will deliver on the bare wire or hutch floor, and kits that are born outside the nest in cold conditions rarely survive. With that in mind, always add the nest box on day 25. This gives the doe three full days to accept and prepare the box before the earliest possible kindling date. This single change prevents most nest-related kit losses.

How I helped a small rabbitry plan kindling dates across a breeding group
In March 2026, a hobby rabbitry owner emailed after breeding four New Zealand White does on March 2, 5, 8, and 11. They wanted to know when to put nest boxes in each cage without disrupting the does too early, and when to begin daily checks for kits.
I ran all four dates through the calculator using the 31-day average rabbit gestation. The Merck Veterinary Manual's rabbit reproduction reference puts normal kindling at 28 to 35 days, with does typically pulling fur and building a nest 1 to 2 days before kindling. The calculator returned kindling windows of April 2–6, April 5–9, April 8–12, and April 11–15. Nest boxes went in 26 days after each breeding date. All four does kindled successfully within their predicted windows.
